 John Lewis Creech registered with the military authorities on Tuesday, June 5, 1917 in Harlan County[1].

 According to the Military Form DA1815 (May 1959), Application For Headstone Or Marker, John served durinbg WW-I with the rank of Private in Company D, 50th Infantry of the 20th Division. John's time served was between May 19, 1918 and March 1, 1919 for a total 10 months active duty. John was honorably discharged in 1919.

 There have been two 20th Divisions in the history of the United States Army.

In early 1917, the 20th Division was established as a National Guard formation consisting of units of the Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming Army National Guards. On 1 April 1917, the division was activated for federal service as the 41st Division.

In October 1918, another 20th Division was organized. This was a regular army and national army division intended for service in World War I. Since the war ended one month later, the 20th Division did not go overseas. It was demobilized in February 1919 at Camp Sevier, South Carolina. Its composition included the 39th Infantry Brigade (48th and 89th Infantry Regiments) and the 40th Infantry Brigade (50th, 90th Infantry Regiments), plus the 58th Artillery Regiment.   John Lewis Creech died May 29, 1960 in Harlan County.

 After John's death, his wife, Maggie J. Creech, ordered a military headstone to be placed on his grave located in Jefferson County, Kentucky at Cave Hill Cemetery[2].
