Calloway Jones was born in Laurel County, Kentucky during 1844 to John Jackson Jones 1806 - 1875 and Sally H. Green.

Calloway Jones married[1] Sarah E. Johnson in Harlan County, Kentucky on February 11, 1869. The civil ceremony was performed by J. B. Wilson, Justice of the Peace. Calloway Jones served in the Union Army from September 22, 1861 through September 23, 1863. He enlisted at the age of 17 in London, Kentucky on August 26, 1861 for a term of three years. Calloway reported for duty at Camp Dick Robinson located on US Rt. 27 near Bryantsville, Kentucky on September 22, 1861. Upon arriving, Calloway was placed in Captain Stratton's 3rd Regiment, Kentucky Infantry with a rank of private.

Calloway is listed in the rolls as "Absent" between April 30 through August 31, 1862. Documents show that Calloway was on sick furlough at home in Laurel County, Kentucky. He returned to duty in September 1862.

On April 10, 1863, Calloway was stationed at Milliken's Bend, Louisiana in which it is noted he was "sick at Millikens". During May and June of 1863 Calloway was convalescing at Perkins Plantation on the Mississippi River in Madison County, Louisiana.
